ESSEN, Germany — German chemical company Evonik Industries AG is considering selling its C4 verbun business, the group has confirmed.
In a written statement to erj On May 6, the Essen-based supplier said the first stage of this process – namely preparations for its establishment as an independent unit – had just begun.
“We will create our C4 unit as an independent entity over the next few months. The next step will be to select a suitable partner for the planned joint venture,” the company statement read.
Evonik declined to comment on potential partners.
The C4 verbund is part of the Performance Materials division and contributed over 10% of group sales
German chemical company Evonik plans to sell its C4 Verbund unit representing more than 10% of the group’s sales, which amounted to 3.3 billion euros in the first quarter of 2022.
As part of its C4 business, Evonik manufactures performance intermediates and plasticizers for a wide range of industries, including automotive, tires and construction.
Among the many applications of Unit C4 products are monomers for synthetic elastomers and latex, including butadiene for rubber materials used in vehicle tires.
Evonik did not provide butadiene monomer production capacity, but said it produces the materials in Marl, Germany, and Antwerp, Belgium – two sites that are connected by a pipeline system.
As previously reported by erjthe butadiene production capacity of the Antwerp plant is 100,000 tonnes per year.
